Two Points of Business
Okay, I have two points of business for you people...
1. Strive for 1.8, or 1.9?
Unfortunately, we're already encroaching on 1.9, but Bukkit JUST got updated. A lot of our plugins are 1.8 ready, but some are still not. The big one, for example, are shops. If I move to 1.8 right now, we will have no global shop, and no player shops, basically rendering iConomy useless. Other plugins, however, like Essentials and Towny, ARE working. So we are not far off. I have already generated a map using my chosen seed, and we can take it from there.
Here is the big problem with all of this. If you read the latest Bukkit Team blog post, they state that if you are refreshing your map for 1.8, the changes in 1.9 will require you to do the same. So, considering we've waited all this time for 1.8, is it really worth it to upgrade before 1.9 is out? I believe the Bukkit release will take a LOT less time due to the big changes from 1.8 already being ironed out. The majority of the changes are really just a few new items and some biome adjustments. It was Creative Mode and all of the other issues that caused the delay in Bukkit.
So, here is my question to all of you: Should we push out 1.8 as soon as I can, or should we wait for 1.9? I estimate that it will take roughly a week for them to push out 1.9, and Bukkit a day or so to push their release. It might be worth it, but I leave that up to you whether you want to wait for not.
And that takes me to my second point of business...
2. Anarchy Mode comes back to Eagleworld!
Since we will have to wait as I tweak our 1.8 prod server and get all of the plugins reconfigured ANYWAY, that'll leave our 1.7 prod server basically sitting idle. Nobody is saving Talons anymore or logging on 1.7, basically making it useless. So, why not have a little fun with our old map? Instead of basically keeping it tidy on 1.7, blow it up on 1.8!
Here are the rules of Anarchy Mode:
- Anarchy Mode runs Vanilla. No mods, no nothing.
- All Admins and Mods have OP privileges.
- Nothing that happens in Anarchy Mode will be saved. The production data is not touched at all.
- No whining. Since it won't persist, don't complain about it.
- EVERYTHING ELSE GOES. Kill, steal, detonate, maim, destroy, whatever. It's anarchy mode!
As one other note, don't bother to bug admins and mods to spawn you items. They won't. However, since they can spawn anything they want for themselves, they are good targets to kill!
The server will stay in Anarchy Mode until I get the server stable on 1.8, or, if everyone elects to wait, 1.9. Also, if we DO wait for 1.9, Anarchy Mode can upgrade right away, since it's Vanilla.

1 – I would vote to wait since I think it will be awhile until another big update like that. who knows what little neat feature will be in 1.9 that we won’t get to play with for awhile if we do 1.8 now. do you know what will be in 1.9?
2 – 1.7 world is already copied to the new setup right? anarchy for a bit sounds fine, but it might get boring if we end up waiting longer than expected for 1.9.

Well, honestly, the impetus behind going to 1.9 is that the biomes are changing drastically from 1.8 to 1.9. It’s really the second half of the update, so the map would be suffering from not upgrading to 1.9.
As far as the old world, it is backed up and saved, ready for the new server. Therefore, Anarchy mode won’t affect anything, and it is just a holdover to tide us over from now till the upgrade. Considering people don’t really play on the 1.7 server now, it seems to make sense. After all, people can start planning towns in anarchy mode!

I think waiting would be great because of the biome changes wouldn’t take effect if the server was updated in 1.8.

Exactly my point. If the time difference between 1.8 and 1.9 was, say, a month, I’d just go for 1.8. But since 1.9 is almost here, it’s worth the wait.

That’s what I figured. A lot of people are already prepped and ready for the map change and are basically chomping at the bit for it. So, let’s decompress and blow up other people’s shit.

Way too little time between updates to justify going ahead with 1.8. Waiting will probably give us a more stable return.

Agreed. I wouldn’t make you people wait for the server to be updated if I didn’t think it would be a strong return. One person mentioned on Twitter, for example, that 1.10 is not far off. Since the biome changes are complete as of 1.9, we can safely move to 1.9 and get the full effect of the map change, despite 1.10’s close release after. It’s all about picking and choosing your battles…

Wait, so what if one of our structures in anarchy from the 1.7 server gets destroyed and that was the one that was picked to bring over to the new map? Will it just be copied from a older save?
